Cricket Batting Pads Guide: How to Choose the Right Pads UK

Cricket batting pads are your first line of defence at the crease. This comprehensive guide explains how to choose the right pads for your level, size and budget in the UK.

Why Batting Pads Matter

Good batting pads can be the difference between a confident innings and a painful one. Modern cricket pads have evolved dramatically — today's designs offer superior protection without restricting your movement at the crease.

Types of Cricket Batting Pads

Traditional Strapped Pads

The classic three-strap design remains the most popular choice for UK club cricketers. These pads offer excellent protection and a traditional feel. Look for high-density foam in the knee roll and thigh flap areas.

Velcro-Fastened Pads

Modern velcro pads are becoming increasingly popular as they're quicker to put on and adjust. Many professional players now prefer this style for its convenience during long batting sessions.

Key Features to Look For

  • Knee Roll — High-density foam knee roll is essential for protecting against rising deliveries
  • Bolsters — Side bolsters protect the inner and outer edges of the leg
  • Thigh Guard — Integrated or separate thigh protection for the front leg
  • Lightweight Materials — Modern pads use cane rods and foam to keep weight minimal
  • PVC or Leather Facing — PVC is more durable and weather-resistant; leather is lighter and more traditional

Sizing Your Batting Pads

Batting pads should sit with the centre of the knee roll directly in front of your knee cap. Most adult pads are available in short, regular, and long fitting:

  • Junior pads — For players under 14 years old
  • Youth pads — For players aged 13–17
  • Adult short — Players up to 5'8"
  • Adult regular — Players 5'8" to 6'1"
  • Adult long — Players over 6'1"

Budget Guide for UK Players

  • £20–£40 — Entry-level pads for beginners and net practice
  • £40–£80 — Mid-range club pads with good protection and durability
  • £80–£150 — Premium pads for serious club and county players
  • £150+ — Professional grade pads used at first-class level
Always try pads on before buying if possible — fit is more important than brand. The pad should not restrict your knee bend or feel loose when walking.

Caring for Your Batting Pads

Extend the life of your pads by cleaning them after each use with a damp cloth. Store them upright in a dry place, and avoid leaving them in a hot car boot which can warp the cane rods.
