English Willow vs Kashmir Willow Cricket Bat: Which Should You Buy?

The biggest decision when buying a cricket bat: English willow or Kashmir willow? We break down the key differences in performance, durability and price to help you decide.

The Two Types of Cricket Bat Willow

Every cricket bat is made from one of two types of willow: English willow (Salix alba var. caerulea) or Kashmir willow (Salix alba). Understanding the difference is essential for any cricketer buying a new bat in the UK.

English Willow Bats

What Makes Them Special

English willow is grown specifically in Essex and Suffolk for cricket bat production. The wood has a unique cellular structure with fibres that compress on impact and spring back, creating the "ping" that transfers maximum energy from bat to ball.

Grades of English Willow

  • Grade 1 — Premium grade. Straight grains, minimal blemishes. Used by professional and county players. Price: £200–£400+
  • Grade 2 — Slight blemishes but excellent performance. Popular with serious club players. Price: £120–£200
  • Grade 3 — Small knots and minor blemishes. Great all-round club bat. Price: £70–£120
  • Grade 4 — More blemishes but still English willow performance. Best entry-level option. Price: £50–£80

Pros of English Willow

  • Superior performance — more power and better ball response
  • Lighter weight for the same size
  • Easier to time the ball
  • Preferred by all serious cricketers

Cons of English Willow

  • Requires knocking in before use
  • More expensive
  • Can crack if poorly maintained

Kashmir Willow Bats

Kashmir willow is sourced from the Kashmir valley in India and Pakistan. It is denser and harder than English willow, which affects its performance characteristics.

Pros of Kashmir Willow

  • Much more affordable (£20–£60)
  • Very durable — resistant to cracking
  • Does not need extensive knocking in
  • Great for net practice and hard-use scenarios

Cons of Kashmir Willow

  • Heavier for the same size bat
  • Less "ping" — less power transfer to the ball
  • Not suited to competitive cricket above beginners level

Our Verdict

For beginners and casual players: Kashmir willow is excellent value. For anyone playing regular club cricket: invest in at least a Grade 3 or 4 English willow bat. The difference in performance is immediately noticeable.
